The Outback Way Attracts Seasoned Off-Road Tourists

For seasoned off-road travellers, the great Australian outback is a new adventure just waiting to be tackled. The Outback Way is a popular route, taking tourists on a trip to see the country’s greatest sights.

As the Outback Way grows in esteem, more people than ever are hitting the open road and exploring Australia beyond the city limits. This is great for regional tourism and encourages Aussies to discover what makes this country so incredible.

But what is the Outback Way? Where will the road take you? And what do you need to know before you set off?

What Is the Outback Way?

The Outback Way is commonly known as Australia’s longest shortcut! This journey takes travellers all the way from Laverton, Western Australia, to Winton, Queensland, winding through the red centre of the Northern Territory.

This 2,800 kilometre track traverses a range of climates and landscapes, offering a glimpse at the diversity of Australia in its rawest form. Along the way, tourists have the chance to spot a range of natural features, along with outdoor art installations and local flora and fauna.

Highlights of the Journey

There’s no shortage of highlights!

The journey, which takes between 6-8 days, will take you past WA’s scenic nature reserves and iconic salt lakes, along with caves and natural springs worth exploring.

You’ll have the opportunity to see Kata Tjuta and Uluru at the heart of Australia, admire the vibrant landscape, and even book in for a walking tour, a camel ride, or a visit to an award-winning light installation, courtesy of Bruce Munro.

Your road trip will also include a stop at Alice Springs, with ample tourist attractions and dining options, and a chance to check out Boulia and Jervois Station before wrapping up in Queensland. Winton is the home of Waltzing Matilda and is bursting with tourist sites.

You’ll Need an Off-Road Camper

When you travel the Outback Way, you’ll need an off-road camper or at least a four-wheel drive. This route is mostly unsealed roads, so it’s not a job for a hatchback.

Watch out for pitfalls, and make sure you have plenty of provisions to last your journey. Don’t forget to make the most of the places you visit, even if it means slowing down to see the sights.

Importantly, choose a vehicle that is robust enough to handle rough terrain and challenging weather conditions, as you’ll be travelling on rural roads, sometimes with limited access to amenities. A good off-road caravan makes for a comfortable trip through the dusty outback, and plenty more adventures ahead.
